About Simple Capture
Simple Capture is a Chrome extension that captures from any browser tab in four formats: MP3 audio, WebM or MP4 video, transcripts (TXT, Markdown or SRT), and PNG screenshots. Four tools in one extension. Click the icon, click record, get a file.
Why it exists
Browser capture tooling is fragmented. There’s an audio recorder, a video recorder, a transcript extractor, a screenshot tool. Each one wants its own subscription, its own account, its own onboarding flow. Simple Capture is the same simple workflow for all four, in a single Chrome extension. Pay once, own it forever.
How it works
The extension uses Chrome’s Tab Capture API for audio and video, the InnerTube API, video player captions and DOM scanning for transcripts, and captureVisibleTab + scroll-stitch for screenshots. Every mode works locally in your browser, with encoding in offscreen documents, so capture doesn’t slow down browsing. When you stop, the file downloads instantly to your Downloads folder.
Free & Pro
The extension is free to use with sensible limits per mode (30-min recordings, 320 kbps audio up to 5 minutes, transcripts, visible-area screenshots plus 3 full-page screenshots a day). An optional Pro upgrade ($39.99 one-time, all four modes, and the same key activates Pro in every other Simple Capture extension) unlocks 320 kbps audio at any length, 8 Mbps Maximum-quality video and MP4 export, SRT subtitle export, unlimited full-page screenshot capture, and unlimited recording.
One extension and separate ones
Simple Capture is for people who want all four modes in one place. The individual extensions (Simple Audio Capture, Simple Video Capture, Simple Transcript Capture, Simple Screenshot Capture) exist for people who only need one capability and want a smaller install. Simple PDF Capture and AI Voice Reader are separate extensions too. Each individual is $14.99 Pro. Every AI Voice Reader feature is free, so its only paid option is Pro for everything. Who built it
Simple Capture was built by Duncan Rawlinson, a photographer and technologist based in Canada. It started as four separate personal tools and got pulled together into one extension worth sharing.
Privacy first
Capture and encoding run locally in your browser. Files save straight to your Downloads folder. Transcript mode fetches the captions of the video you are viewing, from YouTube or from the site that hosts the player.
